Gazipur is a big district adjacent to capital city Dhaka with the area of 1770skm. The total
population is around 60,00,000 where 49% are female and the ratio of population density is being
increasing highly day by day due to rapid urbanization. Literacy rate is 56.40%. The major occupation
of people is agriculture, besides a large number of garments’ workers are being migrated from nearest
districts. Recently, Gazipur turned into City-corporation; there are five sub-districts, four municipalities,
six police station, forty four Union Parishad and 814 villages.
Although a large number of education institutes and health service outlets are being situated in Gazipur
but the quality of education is a major concern. As most of the parents are illiterate and unaware, they
are rarely look for quality of education. On the other hand, due to urbanization density of population is
raising day by day that couldn’t be covered by existing education institutions. 90% children of age 0-5
have no opportunity for their comprehensive development. There are around 2% children who never
enrolled in any form of education institute due to different form of disabilities. Around 10% children in
primary schools are with mild/moderate disabilities who are depriving from quality supports at school.
Ultimately the disable children are performing slowly at school and within a short time they are being
dropped-out from education system. As a result, disable children are turning into un-productive social
being and depriving from all sort of human rights.
There are lots of root causes for being a disable child which is increasing day by day. People are not
aware about their re-productive health and very careless about pre-natal, anti-natal and post-natal care;
on the other hand, there are very limited health service outlets in the community, even the existing
outlets are not complementing/supplementing improved health supports. Thus, creating disable child.
Early identification of disability and proper caring can be resolved 70% of disability from the society, but
we can’t do that in time in a proper way. The other side of the coin is very dangerous, disable children
treats as a burden and growing up with lots of deprivation. Parents don’t want to spend time, money
and labor for disabled kids, there are no treatment for their cure at the society, there is no accessibilities
at schools, no scope to participate in any social event. Most of the time disable children are treated as
handicapped children, but actually the society, institutions and the service outlets are handicapped
because they can’t accommodate the children who are with disabilities. The following major causes are
identified for creating disability:
1. Overpopulation and poverty: Gazipur is one of the most densely populated countries in the
world. It has about 6 million people and 2.5 million children below 18 years of age, and over 31%
of households still live below the national poverty line.
2. High levels of malnutrition: Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies continue to impair the full
cognitive and physical development of millions of children in Bangladesh. Stunting among children
under 5 is reported to be 54% in the poorest groups. Compared to Bangladesh’s decline in child
mortality, progress on reduction of stunting has been much slower. Iodine deficiency disorders
were found among 40% of school-age children in 2011. Child marriage and early pregnancy,
anemia and inappropriate food intake during preg
